Description: Location. The historic CLIFT Hotel in San Francisco, Calif., blends old-world ambience with modern glamour just two blocks from Union Square's dining and shopping venues. This hotel is one-half mile from the Moscone Convention Center and Nob Hill. Both Transamerica Pyramid and AT&T Park are one mile away.
Hotel Features. The eclectic collection of this hotel's modern furnishings provide a drastic difference from its classic Italian Renaissance exterior, originally constructed in 1913. Guests receive preferential access to the hotel's legendary restaurant, Asia de Cuba. Silk curtains, mahogany and leather banquettes, hand-blown Murano glass lamps, and a communal dining table fashioned from hand-etched Venetian mirrors define this elegant setting. Appetizers include lobster pot stickers and coconut-conch ceviche, while popular main dishes include roasted lime and garlic duck and Hunan-style fish stuffed with crab. Legend claims that the bark from a single California redwood comprises the walls of the Redwood Room, the hotel's renowned bar. The 30-foot ceilings, digital art, subdued lighting and leather and velvet furnishings attract celebrities and local trendsetters. Additional hotel amenities include a business center with complimentary high-speed wired and wireless Internet access. Recreational offerings include a fitness center with cardiovascular equipment.

Guestrooms. The CLIFT Hotel has 363 guestrooms with sumptuous bedding consisting of down comforters and 400-thread count Egyptian cotton linens. Custom-made white-birch furnishings complement rich velvet, leather and silk fabrics. Guestroom décor also includes sleigh beds and Venetian-glass lamps and desks. High-speed Internet access, cable television and DVD players are accessible in each room. Bathrooms boast robes and Agua Bathhouse products.

Expert Tip. Check out works by worldwide artists and furnishing collections, including the Louis XVI chair, staged throughout the public areas of this hotel as evidence of a major reconstruction in the 1990s.

Great location for leisure or business. Every staff person we had any contact with (front desk, housekeeping, & bell staff/doormen) was attentive, friendly and accommodating.

The hotel was lovely. Enjoyed the high-design concept and beautiful decor. Rooms were comfortable; staff was very friendly and helpful. Location was great. I thought the restaurant and room service menu too expensive for breakfast, but there were plenty of places to dine, get breakfast to take up to the rooms, or get a good coffee, right across the street, or down the block. I would have loved to dine at the Asia de Cuba Restaurant, but I was with 2 teenagers who didn't care one way or the other. Would have gone if I were with my husband. A few more practical amenities would have been nice. There was little drawer space for example; no coffee or ice. My daughters were thrilled with everything about the hotel, elegance, decor, service, in-room entertainment, and location.

Overall, the hotel is a high-end, post-modern place. If you want a conventional lobby, it is not for you. If not, it is a place you won't be likely to forget.

Great location and staff. Hotel and rooms were trendy. The bed was very hard. Nice workout area.

The hotel was very elegant, well appointed and the staff beyond helpful. On our departure day, they were out of town cars for our trip to the airport. The doorman went up the street knocking on town cars in front of other hotels to find one for us. I rate hotels by pillows, staff and the shower. The shower was the best I have ever had in a hotel in any country. The staff was friendly and extremely helpful. The room was tended to twice a day, more than I like but we put the privacy tag on the door in the afternoon. The workout room was equipped better than any hotel I have stayed in. Would gladly pay full price but I didn't which made the stay even sweeter.

The Hotel Cleft is a trendy, but elegant, hotel. The lighting in the bar, hallways and elevators is a little too low, but the rooms are spacious and elegant.

The staff is first-rate. Warm, friendly and helpful. The rooms are old but refurbished. That means small but nicely appointed. If you do go to the cleft, you're going to love the sheets!

The Clift hotel is a Mandarin located in the heart of san Francisco's union square. The bathrooms look somewhat dated, but the beds are comfortable, and the rooms are decorated in a hip and trendy style. The concierge was helpful, and the bar on the first floor is quite the hot spot on weekends.

The Clift's location can't be beat. Its two blocks from Union Square and in the heart of the theater district. Its lobby has an off-beat upscale ambience, but is far too dark! The dark theme carried into our room as well. The hallways to the rooms had better lighting, but once in the room it was hard to get good enough light to read. The rooms were also short of storage space. There was no dresser and the nightstands were merely plastic cubes with no storage room. I was surprised that the furniture looked like Ikea quality or less. Fortunately, the bed was exceptionally comfortable with wonderful linens and pillows.

Good location. Tiny room. Staffs are not so friendly. And most important is everything costs money. Even for tooth brush and paste, they will charge you for that. Luckily, there's a Walgreen's in the opposite. I can buy water and some necessities.

This is a great place to stay if you are young and trendy. The bar downstairs was a hot spot and the location is great for theater goers. As for families we younger children, I would not recommend this hotel.

The Cliff hotel is modern, unusual and has a rich decor. The room and beds were comfortable and the staff was friendly. The television set could use an upgrade, overall I was very satisfied with the hotel and my husband definitely liked it and we would stay there again.

It's too dark in this hotel - lobby, elevators. I'm in my early 30's and found it too dark, trying too hard to be different/trendy. The room floors are properly lighted which is good. The cleaning staff was friendly. They need to do something about the front desk. They're not understaffed; they'd just rather talk to each other. You felt like they were doing you a favor. After this hotel, I was in whistler at the Fairmont and the contrast was so different. You actually felt welcome.

This was an incredible hotel. The staff is utterly amazing. The concierge Philippe is the best person to ask for anything that is san Francisco. The bar/lounge gets packed on the weekends and is fun to be in with some many different people. The location to union square in unbeatable. I would recommend it to anyone who wants to be in the middle of vs. the room is small but so is every other hotel room in vs. we were never in the room.

Because of the climate in san Francisco, it would be nice if the rooms had a more comfortable, cozy feel.

Staying at the cleft hotel was a very nice experience. The general decor was unique. The staff was friendly and engaging. (I observed one staff member call several popular restaurants for a foreign couple to find out which could take them sooner, then made reservations for them.) My room was very clean and spacious. The bed was one of the most comfortable beds I?ve slept in while traveling. I appreciated their "green" options, which let me specify if I wanted to reuse my linens and towels during my stay to preserve on energy and water.

I enjoyed the hotel. Great food! Can't beat the atmosphere. Can get a bit too crowded though. Will come back!
